What is Awana?

The AWANA program at Chinese Christian Church of Thousand Oaks is a Bible-centered children’s club for preschoolers through sixth grade (3-12 years old). The goal of AWANA is to reach boys and girls, and their families, with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him. The AWANA name stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. 2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Our program focuses on a clear, consistent, and fun Bible memorization approach. Our caring leaders are dedicated to helping children come to know Christ in a personal way and then guiding them in their daily spiritual walk with the Lord.

What happens at AWANA every week? The weekly AWANA meetings are made up of three segments intertwined to be a fun way for children to learn and grow in the Word. These three segments are known as Game Time, Handbook Time and Counsel Time. Game Time is made up of various Circle games that are unique to the AWANA program. Children love this time of the AWANA program. Our four-color teams compete and develop an appreciation of working as a team. Handbook Time is dedicated to Bible memorization. Our clubbers learn verses at home and then recite them to their leaders at AWANA. The Bible verses are reviewed with the leaders to ensure each child is not only memorizing the verses but also understanding them so that the children can use them in their daily lives. Counsel Time is the heart of the AWANA program. It is during counsel time each week that the gospel is clearly presented and a life application story is given.

Cubbies (Preschool thru Pre-K)

Our youngest clubbers are the Cubbies. They range in age from three to four years old. Cubbies is unique because it supports and maintains parents as the primary source of spiritual nurturing by directly involving them in the teaching and learning process. Each week at club they have a Bible verse to learn and a puppet story to illustrate that verse. They also make weekly crafts and participate in age-appropriate games.

Sparks (Kindergarten thru 2nd Grade)

Sparks is for children in kindergarten through second grade. In Sparks, children learn the basic truths about God, Jesus Christ, salvation, and the Bible. In the three years that a child spends as a Sparky, he/she will learn over 50 Bible verses.

Truth & Training, T&T (3rd thru 6th Grade)

T&T teaches boys and girls the truth of God's Word and trains them to follow Christ in their daily lives. T&T go through handbooks that are more rigorous and require the clubbers to apply the truths of God’s Word to their daily life. Upon completion of the program, a child will have learned several hundred Bible verses and studied dozens of passages from the Old and New Testaments.
